Qatar is a hereditary emirate occupying a small peninsula on the Persian Gulf, with its capital at Doha and largely low-lying desert terrain. Its economy centers on natural gas, of which it holds some of the world's largest proven reserves, making it a leading exporter of liquefied natural gas. Doha hosts the Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I. M.
Pei, and the broadcaster Al Jazeera, and the country hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar gained independence from Britain in 1971.
