description North Macedonia Overview
North Macedonia is a landlocked, mountainous country in the Balkans with its capital at Skopje, whose old bazaar reflects centuries of Ottoman rule. It declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and adopted its present name in 2019 under an agreement with Greece. Lake Ohrid, shared with Albania, is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes; the lakeside town of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves numerous Byzantine churches and was an early center of Slavic literacy. A substantial Albanian minority makes up roughly a quarter of the population.
