Qianling Mausoleum

The Qianling Mausoleum is the joint burial site of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang dynasty and his wife Wu Zetian. Wu Zetian holds the historical distinction of being the only woman to rule China as an undisputed empress regnant. Their tomb is one of the most significant imperial sites in Chinese history.

The mausoleum is located near the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi province, China. It is situated directly into the slopes of Mount Liang. The site is part of a larger network of famous Tang dynasty tombs scattered throughout the region.

Despite numerous attempts by tomb raiders over the centuries, the main underground chamber of the Qianling Mausoleum has never been successfully excavated or opened. It remains one of the most intact and untouched imperial tombs in China. The massive stone structures and pathways above ground, however, are heavily visited.

Visitors can explore the massive Spirit Way, which is lined with hundreds of intricate stone carvings. Notable statues include winged horses, foreign ambassadors, and the famous blank stele erected for Empress Wu Zetian. The landscape is also dotted with the smaller, excavated satellite tombs of royal family members.
