Raul Hilberg

Hilberg's landmark work is *The Destruction of the European Jews*, first published in 1961 by Quadrangle Books. It was the first major study to systematically trace how the German bureaucracy—transport ministries, finance offices, and rail agencies—organized the genocide rather than framing it solely around ideology or individual hatred.

Hilberg applied an administrative-science framework to the Holocaust, analyzing the Nazi state as a functioning machinery of destruction with distinct stages: definition, expropriation, concentration, and annihilation. This approach was controversial among contemporaries who preferred a narrative or intentionalist lens but became foundational for subsequent Holocaust scholarship.

Hilberg served as an expert witness at the 1985 trial of Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel in Toronto, where his testimony about the documentary record of the Holocaust was extensively cross-examined. The trial transcript remains a frequently cited primary source for scholars studying denial arguments and refutations.

Hilberg was a professor of political science at the University of Vermont in Burlington for most of his career, despite being one of the world's most prominent Holocaust historians. He held this position from 1956 until his retirement, choosing a small public university over more prestigious offers.
