Ray Hudson

Ray Hudson is a prominent British economic geographer who has spent the vast majority of his academic career associated with Durham University. He eventually became a professor and the Director of the Wolfson Research Institute there.

Hudson's research primarily examines the political economy of places shaped by industrial decline, focusing on deindustrialization, labor, and regional inequality. Much of his empirical work specifically investigates the socio-economic restructuring of northeast England.

As an expert in deindustrialization, Hudson has written extensively about the closure of coal mines, shipyards, and heavy manufacturing plants in northeast England. His research tracks how these historical losses created long-term regional inequality and altered the local working-class identity.

Hudson argues that regional inequality is deeply rooted in historical capitalist development and uneven geographical development. He emphasizes that post-industrial regions require targeted state intervention and active labor policies to overcome the economic scars left by deindustrialization.
