The red-crowned woodpecker, Melanerpes rubricapillus, is a medium-sized woodpecker native to parts of Central and South America, including Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and nearby regions. It is associated with open habitats such as woodland edges, savannas, cultivated areas, and plantations, where it searches for insects and other food on trees and sometimes the ground. Adults are identified by the red crown and contrasting black, white, and gray plumage.
