Reinhold Glière (1875–1956) was a prominent Russian and Soviet composer celebrated for his large-scale orchestral works and traditional late-Romantic style. He is best known internationally for his Third Symphony, subtitled Ilya Muromets, and the 1927 ballet The Red Poppy. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Glière largely avoided political persecution under the Soviet regime, partly by incorporating socialist realism into his later compositions. He was also a dedicated educator at the Moscow Conservatory, where he taught notable composers like Aram Khachaturian.
