Rennsteig Tunnel

The Rennsteig Tunnel is located on the A71 Autobahn in Germany, providing a major north-south route through the state of Thuringia. It allows the highway to pass directly beneath the Thuringian Forest mountain range.

Opening to traffic in 2003, the tunnel stretches for approximately 7.9 kilometers, making it one of the longest road tunnels in Germany. It significantly cut travel times for drivers crossing the region.

Unlike some specialized tunnels in Europe, the Rennsteig Tunnel is part of the federal autobahn network and is toll-free for standard passenger cars. However, commercial trucks are subject to Germany's standard autobahn toll system.

The tunnel is equipped with two separate tubes for directional traffic and features multiple cross-passages for emergency evacuations. It also utilizes advanced ventilation systems, fire detection sensors, and a lowered speed limit to ensure driver safety.
