After serving in the Navy and spending time in Canada, he established his music career in the late 1970s with his band the Stone City Band. His 1981 hit "Super Freak" became his signature song and was later sampled in MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." James was known for his flamboyant stage presence and pioneered the "punk-funk" sound that influenced many R&B artists.
