Rikyu

description Rikyu Overview

Rikyu is a 1989 Japanese historical drama directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, depicting the life of Sen no Rikyu, the 16th-century tea master who shaped the Japanese tea ceremony. The film portrays Rikyu's service under warlords Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the growing conflict between his philosophical principles and Hideyoshi's political ambitions that culminated in Rikyu's ordered suicide. Teshigahara, known for works including Woman in the Dunes, applies a contemplative style to the Sengoku-period subject. The film is considered a significant late-career work by the director.
