Rockland Breakwater Light

The breakwater extends approximately 4,000 feet from the mainland out to the lighthouse across Rockland Harbor. The path consists of massive granite blocks, some of which are uneven, and the walk typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way. Visitors should be cautious of footing and avoid the walk during high waves or stormy weather.

The lighthouse was completed in 1902, shortly after the breakwater itself was finished. The breakwater was constructed between 1881 and 1899 to protect Rockland Harbor from damaging storms. The light was added at the seaward end to guide vessels approaching the harbour.

The lighthouse is maintained by the Friends of Rockland Harbor Lights, a nonprofit organization that opens the tower to visitors during summer months. The interior has been partially restored to reflect its early-20th-century appearance. Access depends on volunteer availability and weather conditions on any given day.

The lighthouse sits at the end of the Rockland Breakwater in Rockland, Maine, on the state's midcoast region. Rockland is approximately 80 miles northeast of Portland along US Route 1. The town is also known for the annual Maine Lobster Festival and the Farnsworth Art Museum.
