Is the Rode NT5 a large-diaphragm or small-diaphragm microphone?

Despite some confusion in general descriptions, the Rode NT5 is actually a small-diaphragm condenser microphone (SDC), not a large-diaphragm. It features a 1/2-inch externally polarized condenser transducer. This smaller diaphragm design is what gives it its highly accurate transient response, making it a favorite for recording acoustic guitars and drum overheads.

Do I need phantom power to use the Rode NT5?

Yes, because the NT5 is a condenser microphone, it requires 48V phantom power from your audio interface or mixing board to operate. Without phantom power engaged, the microphone will not pass any audio signal. It does not run on battery power or USB bus power like some entry-level podcasting microphones.

Can the Rode NT5 be used outdoors for field recording?

The NT5 can be used outdoors, but you absolutely must use a foam windscreen or a dedicated blimp to protect it from wind noise. The sensitive condenser capsule will easily pick up even the slightest breeze, which will ruin a recording. Many indie filmmakers use a matched pair of NT5s in a stereo bar configuration inside a Rycote blimp for ambient nature recording.

What is the difference between the Rode NT5 and the NT55?

The main difference is that the NT55 includes an additional -10dB or -20dB pad switch and a high-pass filter switch, whereas the standard NT5 is a fixed-attenuation design with no onboard controls. The NT55 offers more flexibility for recording exceptionally loud sound sources, like snare drums or guitar cabinets. Both share the exact same sonic character and capsule design.
