help Rode VideoMic Go FAQ
Does the Rode VideoMic Go need a battery?
No — it has no battery at all and draws plug-in power directly from your camera's 3.5 mm mic jack. That makes it genuinely plug-and-record at just around 70 grams, though it won't work on gear that doesn't supply plug-in power.
What's the difference between the original VideoMic Go and the VideoMic Go II?
The original, launched back in 2013, is an analog-only shotgun mic with a 3.5 mm output, while the 2021 VideoMic Go II adds a USB-C digital mode so it can work as a USB microphone with phones and computers. The Go II also gained features like a safety channel in that mode.
Can I use the Rode VideoMic Go with my iPhone or Android phone?
It's possible with a 3.5 mm TRRS adapter, but phones don't always supply the plug-in power the mic needs, which is exactly the scenario the USB-capable Go II was created for. If phone filming is your main use, the Go II is the safer choice.
Do I need a shockmount and windscreen for the VideoMic Go?
The mic includes an integrated Rycote Lyre suspension that isolates it from camera-handling noise, so no external shockmount is needed. It ships with a foam windshield, but for outdoor breezes you'll want an add-on furry windshield.
