Ruth Underhill was an American anthropologist known for research and writing on the Tohono O’odham, formerly called the Papago. Her 1936 book The Autobiography of a Papago Woman presents the life story of Maria Chona through recorded oral history and editorial shaping, while her later Social Organization of the Papago Indians addressed social structure. Underhill also worked in Native American education and administration for the United States government.
