Sajama Lines

The Sajama Lines are a massive network of thousands of deep, parallel etchings found in western Bolivia near the Nevado Sajama volcano. They are considered one of the largest and most extensive geoglyph sites in the world.

The lines are attributed to the indigenous people who lived near the Nevado Sajama volcano in western Bolivia. They were etched into the ground over hundreds of years by continuously clearing the vegetation and dark surface rocks.

The network of lines covers an astonishing area of approximately 22,000 square kilometers in western Bolivia. The exact lines stretch for miles across the Altiplano, making them clearly visible from high-altitude aircraft and satellites.

Archaeologists are not entirely sure, but it is widely believed the lines had a spiritual or ceremonial purpose related to the surrounding mountains and local pilgrimage routes. Their sheer scale makes a purely practical use unlikely.
