Sakurajima fumaroles

Sakurajima was formerly an island until a massive volcanic eruption in 1914 connected it to the Osumi Peninsula via lava flows. Today, it is a peninsula that allows land access to the active stratovolcano. This eruption was historically significant as it was the most powerful volcanic event in twentieth-century Japan.

The Sakurajima fumaroles, which are volcanic gas vents, are prominently visible around the flanks and crater areas of the volcano. Visitors can often observe continuous gas emissions and daily ash plumes rising from the active Showa crater. There are designated observation points, like the Yunohira Observatory, located a safe distance away.

The fumaroles at Sakurajima continuously emit a mixture of volcanic gases, predominantly water vapor and sulfur dioxide. This constant emission of sulfur dioxide contributes to the distinct smell in the area and can sometimes cause acid rain in the surrounding region. Monitoring these gas emissions is crucial for volcanologists predicting future activity.

Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, often producing daily ash plumes and continuous gas emissions. Eruptions have historically varied from small, daily ventings of ash to large, explosive events that launch volcanic bombs into the air. The Japan Meteorological Agency maintains a strict monitoring system to issue warnings to nearby Kagoshima residents.
