Salvadori's Duck

description Salvadori's Duck Overview

Salvadori's duck, Salvadorina waigiuensis, is a distinctive waterfowl endemic to New Guinea. It inhabits swift, rocky rivers and streams, mainly in mountainous country, and is adapted to swimming and maneuvering in strong currents. Its dark brown, mottled plumage provides camouflage among wet rocks and broken water, and its restricted river habitat makes it difficult to observe. The species is named after Italian ornithologist Tommaso Salvadori.

help Salvadori's Duck FAQ

Where can Salvadori's Duck be found?

Salvadori's Duck, also called Salvadori's Teal, is endemic to New Guinea, including Indonesian New Guinea and Papua New Guinea. It is associated mainly with mountain torrents, fast streams, and alpine lakes. [British Waterfowl Association](https://www.waterfowl.org.uk/wildfowl/true-ducks/salvadoris-teal/)

How is Salvadori's Duck adapted to fast rivers?

It is structurally adapted to turbulent water rather than only calm ponds, and observations describe it crossing fast streams with wings flapping and legs just below the surface. Its jerky head movements and forward looking eyes also help it watch the surrounding current and prey. [Wildfowl journal](https://wildfowl.wwt.org.uk/index.php/wildfowl/article/download/500/500)

What does Salvadori's Duck eat?

It is an omnivore that feeds by dabbling and diving. Aquatic insects and larvae are important foods, with plants, tadpoles, and small fish also reported. [British Waterfowl Association](https://www.waterfowl.org.uk/wildfowl/true-ducks/salvadoris-teal/)

Why do some sources call it Salvadori's Teal instead of Salvadori's Duck?

Both names refer to the same species, Salvadorina waigiuensis, which is the only species in the genus Salvadorina. The species was formally described in 1894 by Walter Rothschild and Ernst Hartert. [British Waterfowl Association](https://www.waterfowl.org.uk/wildfowl/true-ducks/salvadoris-teal/)
