description Sam Butera Overview

Sam Butera was an American tenor saxophonist and arranger recognized for his work as the musical director for entertainer Louis Prima. Originating from New Orleans, his aggressive, honking saxophone style helped define the Las Vegas lounge act sound during the late 1950s and 1960s. He led the backup band The Witnesses, blending jazz, rhythm and blues, and early rock and roll to create an energetic performance style that complemented Prima's vocals and trumpet playing.
