description Sargassum horneri Overview

Sargassum horneri is a large annual brown seaweed native to the western Pacific around Japan, Korea, and China, where it grows attached to rocky reefs. First detected in California in 2003, it has spread along the Pacific coast of North America as an invasive species, forming dense stands that can overgrow and shade native kelp communities. In East Asia the species also produces massive drifting blooms that have affected coastal waters and aquaculture operations.
