description Schiaparelli EDM Overview
Schiaparelli EDM (Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module) was a European Space Agency lander flown on the 2016 ExoMars program together with Russia's Roscosmos, and named for the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. Launched in March 2016 alongside the Trace Gas Orbiter, it attempted to land at Meridiani Planum in October but crashed after a software fault triggered premature parachute release and thruster shutdown. Its descent telemetry nonetheless proved valuable for engineering the later ExoMars rover effort.
