The secretarybird, Sagittarius serpentarius, is a large bird of prey found in open grasslands, savannas, and shrublands across sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike most raptors, it spends much of its time walking on the ground and searches on foot for insects, reptiles, rodents, and other small animals. Its long legs, crest feathers, and powerful downward kicks help it subdue prey, including snakes, while its broad wings allow it to fly between feeding and nesting areas.
