Sefar Petroglyphs

Sefar lies within Tassili n'Ajjer in southeastern Algeria, near the oasis town of Djanet. The wider national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing thousands of prehistoric images.

Many figures have large rounded or featureless heads, floating bodies, and unusual proportions associated with the Round Head artistic period. Famous compositions at Sefar include monumental humanlike figures surrounded by smaller people.

The imagery includes people and animals from periods when the central Sahara was wetter and supported more vegetation and wildlife. Later Tassili art also records pastoral communities with domesticated cattle.

Sefar is in a remote maze of sandstone formations normally reached through organized trekking expeditions from the Djanet area. Local regulations and desert conditions generally make an authorized guide and logistical support necessary.
