description Senegal River Overview
The Senegal River is a transboundary river of West Africa, rising in Guinea and flowing for about 1,790 kilometers through Mali, along parts of the Senegal-Mauritania border, and into the Atlantic Ocean. Its basin crosses the Sahel, where seasonal flow is important for irrigation, drinking water, fishing, and livestock. Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal cooperate through the Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal, founded in 1972, to manage shared water resources and infrastructure.
