Seven Psychopaths Screenplay

Martin McDonagh wrote and directed Seven Psychopaths (2012) as his second feature film after In Bruges (2008). The films are not narratively connected, but both star Colin Farrell and share McDonagh's distinctive blend of dark comedy, existential themes, and graphic violence. McDonagh later directed Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), the latter reuniting Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

The central dog in the screenplay is a Shih Tzu named Bonny, belonging to the gangster Charlie played by Woody Harrelson, who becomes emotionally attached to the dog and seeks violent revenge when it is stolen. The dognapping is orchestrated by Billy, played by Sam Rockwell, and Hans, played by Christopher Walken. The small, harmless appearance of the Shih Tzu contrasts humorously with the escalating violence of the plot.

The screenplay follows Colin Farrell as Marty, a struggling screenwriter attempting to write a script called "Seven Psychopaths" while his friend Billy runs a dognapping scheme. The film's plot deliberately mirrors the screenplay Marty is trying to write, creating a self-referential commentary on storytelling, violence, and the creative process. McDonagh uses this structure to explore questions about the ethics of on-screen violence.

Within the film's meta-narrative, the psychopaths include characters both real and fictional: a Quaker who stalks his daughter's killer, a serial killer who targets other serial killers, the gangster Charlie, Billy and Hans the dognappers, and others Marty encounters or invents. The screenplay blurs the line between the psychopaths in Marty's script-in-progress and the actual criminals he becomes entangled with. This layered structure is a hallmark of McDonagh's playwriting background.
