Shapwick Heath

The Sweet Track is an ancient Neolithic timber walkway preserved within the waterlogged peat deposits of Shapwick Heath. Recognized as one of the oldest engineered roads in the world, it was built around 3800 BC. The anaerobic marshy conditions perfectly preserved the wood, providing an incredible archaeological record of early human engineering.

Shapwick Heath is a National Nature Reserve located in the Somerset Levels of England, an area characterized by extensive wetlands and freshwater marshes. It sits adjacent to the Shapwick Moor reserve and is carefully managed by Natural England. The reserve is a crucial protected habitat within the British countryside.

The reserve's wetland habitats are famous for immense starling murmurations during the winter months, where thousands of birds dance in the sky before roosting. It is also home to rare wetland species such as otters, water voles, and the great white egret. The diverse ecosystem supports a massive variety of aquatic insects and marshland flora.

Shapwick Heath is managed primarily by Natural England, working alongside local conservation groups to maintain the delicate ecosystem. They carefully control the water levels to preserve the ancient peat bogs and protect the fragile Sweet Track. Their ongoing management ensures the wetland remains a safe haven for its unique biodiversity.
