Sharon Zukin

Published in the 1980s, "Loft Living" explores how artists, developers, and shifting cultural tastes transformed former industrial spaces in New York City into highly desirable residential properties. Zukin analyzes this process as an early indicator of urban gentrification and the commodification of culture. She specifically focuses on the SoHo neighborhood.

Zukin's research focuses on modern cities, real estate development, culture, and consumption. She investigates how economic changes and cultural branding alter the physical landscape and social dynamics of urban spaces. Her work often critiques how urban planning prioritizes capital over community.

In her book "Naked City," Zukin explores how urban gentrification destroys the very "authenticity" that attracts middle-class residents to neighborhoods in the first place. She argues that the socioeconomic shifts displace the original working-class and minority communities that gave these areas their cultural identity. The process ultimately replaces genuine grit with commercialized sterility.

Zukin is a Professor Emerita at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY).
