description Shimogamo Shrine Overview

Shimogamo Shrine, formally known as Kamo-mioya-jinja, is a historically significant Shinto shrine situated in northern Kyoto, Japan. Surrounded by the ancient Tadasu no Mori forest, the site predates the establishment of Kyoto as the national capital in the 8th century. It functions as the guardian shrine for the local area and is closely associated with Kamigamo Shrine. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, the shrine jointly hosts the annual Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto's three main annual festivals.
