help Sigiriya FAQ

Who built Sigiriya and when?

Sigiriya was constructed in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa I of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. After seizing the throne, Kashyapa moved his capital to this granite rock for defensive purposes and built a palace complex at its summit.

How tall is the Sigiriya rock fortress?

The granite column rises approximately 200 meters (about 660 feet) above the surrounding plains. Visitors must climb a series of staircases, including a metal spiral staircase attached to a sheer cliff wall, to reach the palace ruins at the top.

What are the Sigiriya frescoes and how many survive?

The frescoes are ancient Sinhala paintings depicting female figures, believed to represent celestial nymphs (apsaras) or royal court ladies. Originally there were reportedly around 500 such paintings spread across the rock face, but roughly 22 survive in a sheltered gallery today.

Is Sigiriya a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes, Sigiriya was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. It is recognized as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning, combining a royal palace, water gardens, and rock art in a single dramatic setting.
