description Sigulda Castle Overview
Sigulda Castle is a medieval fortress ruin in Latvia’s Gauja River valley. Construction began in 1207 for the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, and the site was later rebuilt for the Livonian Order after the military order was absorbed into the Teutonic system. Its position on the left bank of the Gauja gave it strategic importance for monitoring waterways and defending the approach to nearby Turaida Castle.
