Sigurd Lewerentz

Sigurd Lewerentz co-designed Stockholm Woodland Cemetery with Gunnar Asplund after they won the competition in 1915. Lewerentz worked on major landscape and chapel elements, and the cemetery later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St Peter's Church in Klippan, completed in the 1960s, is admired for its severe brickwork, exposed structure, and almost handmade handling of details. Lewerentz used dark brick, steel, and modest liturgical spaces to create a church that feels both austere and intensely physical.

Both were central Swedish architects, and both worked on Woodland Cemetery, but their later reputations differ. Asplund is often linked to Nordic Classicism and the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, while Lewerentz's late work, especially Klippan, is studied for rough material presence and construction logic.
