help Silbergeier FAQ

Where exactly is the Silbergeier climbing route?

Silbergeier climbs the limestone of the Fourth Kirchlispitze in the Rätikon, on the Austrian side of the range near the Swiss border. It is commonly approached from the area above the Lünersee in Vorarlberg.

How difficult is Silbergeier?

The route is graded 8b+ and contains six demanding pitches. Several pitches are in the eighth grade, so it requires sustained technical climbing rather than one isolated crux move.

Who made the first ascent of Silbergeier?

Austrian climber Beat Kammerlander completed the first free ascent in 1994. The route became one of the defining hard alpine sport climbs of the 1990s.

Is Silbergeier a sport route or a traditional route?

It is bolt-protected, but its widely spaced protection and exposed multipitch setting make it much more serious than a typical sport crag route. Climbers need strong route-finding, multipitch systems, and confidence climbing well above bolts.
