help Skylitzes Chronicle (Codex Matritensis) FAQ

What period of Byzantine history does the Madrid Skylitzes cover?

John Skylitzes' chronicle runs from the death of Emperor Nikephoros I in 811 to the removal of Michael VI in 1057. The surviving illustrated copy was produced later, during the twelfth century.

Why is the Madrid Skylitzes unique?

It is the only surviving extensively illustrated manuscript of a Greek historical chronicle. Its 574 miniatures depict battles, court ceremonies, diplomacy, punishment, ships, and scenes of everyday life.

Was the Madrid Skylitzes made in Madrid?

No, it was probably produced in Norman Sicily, where Greek, Latin, and Islamic artistic traditions met. Its name comes from its present home in the National Library of Spain in Madrid.

Are the Madrid Skylitzes miniatures reliable pictures of Byzantine life?

They are valuable evidence, but they were painted centuries after some of the events described. Historians therefore compare details such as clothing, weapons, and ceremonies with other textual and material sources.
