help Slate Digital ML-1 FAQ
Does the Slate Digital ML-1 model vintage microphones by itself?
No, the ML-1 captures a deliberately neutral signal and the microphone character is applied in Slate Digital's Virtual Microphone System software. The raw recording can be reprocessed with a different model later.
Does the ML-1 have selectable polar patterns?
The original ML-1 is a cardioid large-diaphragm condenser, so it does not physically switch among cardioid, omni, and figure-eight patterns. Software modeling can change tonal character, but it cannot recreate sound that a different physical pickup pattern never captured.
Does the Slate Digital ML-1 require phantom power?
Yes, it connects by XLR and requires 48-volt phantom power from an audio interface or microphone preamp. Slate also recommends recording without input EQ, compression, or analog coloration so the modeling software receives a clean signal.
What is the difference between the ML-1 and the newer ML-1A?
The ML-1A is the newer Slate modeling microphone and includes access to the current Virtual Microphone System plugin. Owners of the legacy ML-1 may need an eligible license or subscription, so software entitlement matters when buying one used.
