description Smoky Quartz Overview
Smoky quartz is a gray, brown, or nearly black variety of quartz, the silicon dioxide mineral SiO2. Its color develops when natural gamma radiation acts on aluminum-related defects in the quartz lattice, although similar color can also be produced by laboratory irradiation. The variety occurs in many geological settings, especially cavities in igneous rocks and pegmatites, and is used both as a gemstone and as a mineral specimen; very dark material is sometimes called morion. It is traditionally regarded as Scotland's national gemstone.
