Snaggletooth

The snaggletooth is a species of deep-sea dragonfish belonging to the family Astronesthidae. It is found globally in the bathypelagic and mesopelagic zones of the ocean. It is adapted to survive in the dark, high-pressure environments of the deep sea.

It is distinguished by a bioluminescent barbel attached to its chin. This glowing appendage acts as a lure in the darkness of the deep ocean to attract smaller fish and crustaceans. Once the prey is close, the snaggletooth uses its massive fang-like teeth to capture it.

The snaggletooth features a dark, often completely black body that helps it camouflage in the deep ocean. Its most prominent physical features are its massive, fang-like teeth and the bioluminescent barbel on its chin. These adaptations make it a fearsome predator in its extreme environment.

They inhabit the bathypelagic and mesopelagic zones across the globe, often referred to as the "midnight zone." This means they live thousands of feet beneath the ocean surface where sunlight cannot penetrate. They are completely adapted to the crushing pressure and freezing temperatures of the deep sea.
