Sobieski Hours

The manuscript derives its name from King John III Sobieski of Poland, who was a prominent later owner of the text. It was originally produced in the southern Netherlands during the early fifteenth century. Today, it is part of the Royal Collection Trust housed at Windsor Castle.

It is a classic illuminated Book of Hours containing the prayers and devotional texts used by lay Christians at prescribed hours of the day. The text is heavily accompanied by elaborate painted decorations and illustrations. It follows the standard liturgical practices of medieval European nobility.

The manuscript was originally produced in the southern Netherlands during the early fifteenth century. This region was a major hub for illuminated manuscript production during the medieval period. The artwork reflects the distinct Gothic style characteristic of Flemish artisans of that era.
