The Spirit rover was a robotic Mars exploration vehicle that successfully landed in Gusev Crater in January 2004 as part of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission. It was designed to analyze rocks and soils to search for evidence of past water activity on the Red Planet. Far exceeding its planned 90-day mission, Spirit continued to transmit valuable scientific data until it became stuck and lost communication in 2010.

Why did the Spirit rover stop moving?
Spirit became embedded in soft Martian soil at a site later called Troy in 2009. NASA could not free all six wheels, so the rover was converted into a stationary science platform.
How long was Spirit supposed to operate on Mars?
Spirit's primary mission was planned for 90 Martian days. After landing in January 2004, it continued working for more than six years.
What did Spirit discover in Gusev Crater?
Spirit found minerals and altered rocks showing that parts of Gusev Crater had once interacted with water. Deposits rich in silica near Home Plate provided especially strong evidence of past hydrothermal or hot-spring conditions.
Are Spirit and Opportunity the same rover?
No. They were twin Mars Exploration Rovers launched in 2003, with Spirit landing in Gusev Crater and Opportunity landing at Meridiani Planum.
