description SS Afric Overview
SS Afric was a White Star Line steamship built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and launched in 1898 for service as a passenger and cargo vessel. During the First World War she also carried troops and horses, completing several troopship voyages before returning to commercial duties. In February 1917, while sailing in the English Channel near the Eddystone Lighthouse, Afric was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-66 and sank, with 145 survivors and 22 deaths.
