description SS Persia (1915) Overview

SS Persia was a British passenger liner operated by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. On 30 December 1915, during the First World War, the German submarine U-38 torpedoed the ship without warning in the Mediterranean while it was traveling toward India, and the vessel sank rapidly with the loss of more than 330 lives. The dead included Robert Ney McNeely, the newly appointed United States consul at Aden, while survivors escaped in lifeboats or from the water.
