Starlink (constellation)

As of late 2024, SpaceX has launched over 6,000 Starlink satellites, with approximately 5,500+ in active orbit, making it by far the largest satellite constellation ever deployed. The company has approval for 12,000 satellites and has requested permission for up to 30,000 more in a proposed 'Gen 2' system. Regular Falcon 9 launches continue deploying approximately 20-23 satellites per mission.

Starlink advertises download speeds of 50-250 Mbps for standard residential users, with typical latency between 25-50 milliseconds, far better than traditional satellite internet. Priority and business tiers can reach speeds up to 220 Mbps. SpaceX has also introduced Starlink Mini, a compact portable terminal designed for mobile use, and continues expanding service to maritime and aviation markets.

Astronomers have raised concerns that Starlink satellites create bright streaks in telescope images, potentially interfering with both optical and radio astronomy observations. SpaceX has implemented mitigations like 'DarkSat' coatings and visors to reduce reflectivity, but studies show the satellites still impact long-exposure observations. The International Astronomical Union continues working with SpaceX and other operators to address these issues as mega-constellations grow.

In the United States, residential Starlink service costs approximately $120 per month with a hardware fee of around $299-$599 depending on the dish model. Service pricing varies by country, with many developing markets receiving subsidized 'Global' plans. Starlink also offers a more affordable 'Roam' plan for mobile users and has received regulatory approval in dozens of countries worldwide.
