Radarsat-2 is a Canadian synthetic aperture radar satellite launched on December 14, 2007 aboard a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur into a Sun-synchronous dawn–dusk orbit at approximately 798 km altitude. Built by MDA (now Maxar) for the Canadian Space Agency, it carries a C-band SAR capable of multiple imaging modes with resolutions from 1 to 100 meters and fully polarimetric capability. Its imagery supports sea-ice monitoring, maritime surveillance, disaster management, agriculture, and resource mapping.

In 2019, MDA sold the satellite and its imagery business to a consortium of Canada's federal and provincial governments for approximately 1 billion Canadian dollars. The satellite continues to be operated by MDA under a service agreement.

How does Radarsat-2's synthetic aperture radar work in all weather conditions?

Radarsat-2 uses C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that transmits microwave pulses at 5.405 GHz and can image day or night through clouds, rain, and darkness. The satellite's radar signals penetrate weather conditions that block optical satellites, making it particularly valuable for monitoring the Arctic where cloud cover is persistent.
