Radarsat-1 was Canada's first commercial Earth observation satellite, launched on November 4, 1995 from Vandenberg Air Force Base aboard a Delta II rocket. Operated by the Canadian Space Agency, it carried a C-band synthetic aperture radar capable of imaging day or night through cloud cover. The satellite monitored Arctic sea ice, managed coastal and marine resources, and supported disaster response. It was decommissioned in March 2013 after far exceeding its planned five-year design life.
