State Tretyakov Gallery

The main building of the State Tretyakov Gallery is located in the Zamoskvorechye district of Moscow, Russia. The historic facade was designed by Viktor Vasnetsov to resemble a traditional Russian fairy-tale terem. A separate, modern building for 20th-century art is located near the Park Kultury metro station.

The gallery was founded by the wealthy Russian merchant, industrialist, and art collector Pavel Tretyakov in the mid-19th century. He began collecting art in 1856 with the goal of creating a national museum. He donated his vast collection to the city of Moscow in 1892.

The museum is the world's foremost repository of Russian fine art, holding over 130,000 exhibits. Its collection spans from the 11th century to the early 20th century, including priceless Russian Orthodox icons and realist masterpieces. Visitors can view famous works by artists like Ilya Repin and Ivan Aivazovsky.

One of the most famous paintings in the gallery is The Apotheosis of War by Vasily Vereshchagin. Another iconic masterpiece is Ilya Repin's Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan. The gallery also holds Andrei Rublev's revered Trinity icon, though it is occasionally loaned out or moved for restoration.
