description Suriname Overview
Suriname is the smallest country in South America, lying on the Atlantic coast between Guyana and French Guiana. Dutch is its official language, a legacy of colonial rule that ended with independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Its population combines descendants of enslaved Africans and indentured Indian and Javanese laborers with Indigenous and other communities, giving it a notably multicultural society. Most of its territory is tropical rainforest, and the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and the historic center of Paramaribo are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
