Sympetrum flaveolum

Sympetrum flaveolum, the yellow-winged darter, is characterized by broad patches of golden-yellow or saffron coloration on its wings, particularly at the base. This distinctive wing coloring sets it apart from most other Sympetrum darter species in Europe. Mature males develop a reddish-orange abdomen, while females and immatures tend to be more yellowish-brown.

Sympetrum flaveolum occurs across parts of Europe and Asia, with its range extending from western Europe through to eastern Russia and East Asia. It favors shallow, marshy, or seasonally flooded water bodies as breeding habitat. In some years, large numbers migrate westward and can appear far outside their normal breeding range.

In the UK, Sympetrum flaveolum is primarily known as a rare migrant or vagrant rather than a resident breeding species. Large influxes of yellow-winged darters can occur in certain years when weather conditions favor migration from the continent. Notable irruption years have brought dozens or even hundreds of individuals to southern and eastern England.
