The Tarim River is the principal river of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, China, and is commonly described as China's longest inland river. It is formed by tributaries descending from the surrounding mountain ranges and flows generally eastward through an arid basin near the Taklamakan Desert. Its water does not reach the sea, instead supporting oases, irrigation, wetlands, and terminal lakes or depressions within an endorheic drainage system.
