Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympic swimmer of all time and the most decorated Olympian in any sport, with 28 total medals (23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze) won across five Olympic Games from 2000 to 2016. His eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics broke Mark Spitz's single-Games record.

Mark Spitz won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics, setting a world record in every event. His record of seven golds at a single Games stood for 36 years until Michael Phelps surpassed it with eight at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Katie Ledecky has won multiple Olympic gold medals across the 2012 London, 2016 Rio de Janeiro, 2020 Tokyo, and 2024 Paris Games, becoming one of the most decorated female swimmers in history. She has dominated the women's 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle events in particular, often winning by enormous margins.

USA Swimming is the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States, responsible for selecting and training the U.S. Olympic swimming team. It sanctions thousands of competitions nationwide and oversees hundreds of thousands of registered competitive swimmers and affiliated clubs.
