Thames whale

The Thames whale was a female northern bottlenose whale that famously swam into the River Thames. This specific species typically resides in deep-water ocean habitats, making its appearance in the shallow river highly unusual. Its misdirection into the city attracted massive public and media attention.

The northern bottlenose whale entered the River Thames in London in January 2006. Crowds gathered along the riverbanks over the course of several days as rescuers attempted to guide the lost animal. Sadly, the rescue operation ultimately failed when the whale convulsed and died on a rescue barge.

Northern bottlenose whales are deep-diving marine mammals that usually reside in the cold waters of the North Atlantic, far from shallow urban rivers. Experts believed the whale became disoriented, lost its way, and inadvertently traveled up the River Thames. This geographical discrepancy was a major concern for the veterinarians involved.

Despite a massive and highly publicized rescue effort to transport the animal back to the open sea, the whale did not survive. Rescuers managed to lift the massive mammal onto a barge to move it toward deeper waters. Unfortunately, the stress of the ordeal and its underlying health issues caused the whale to pass away.
