The Balloon

The Balloon is an 1899 woodcut by Swiss artist Félix Vallotton. Its flattened perspective and stark contrast reflect the Nabis movement’s interest in bold, economical print design.

Vallotton suppresses conventional depth so the arrangement reads as a deliberate pattern of shapes and dark tones. That compressed space is one of the print’s defining modern qualities.

Look for the sharp separation between positive and negative space, simplified forms, and strong black areas. Those effects come from the direct visual language of woodcut printing rather than from painterly shading.

Vallotton became especially known for woodcuts during the 1890s, before returning more heavily to painting around the end of that decade. The 1899 date places this work near the close of his best-known printmaking period.
