The Fall of Hyperion

The Fall of Hyperion is the direct sequel to Dan Simmons's 1989 novel Hyperion and continues the same story immediately, following the pilgrims at the Time Tombs. It should be read after Hyperion, as it resolves the cliffhanger endings of the first book.

The novel continues following the seven pilgrims from Hyperion as the Ousters invade and the Shrike threatens them. A new major character, CEO Meina Gladstone, directs the Hegemony's military response from the capital.

The Shrike is a terrifying, seemingly invincible creature covered in blades and thorns that can manipulate time. It guards the Time Tombs on Hyperion and serves mysterious purposes tied to both the pilgrims and larger cosmic forces.

The Fall of Hyperion was published in 1990 and was nominated for both the Hugo and Locus Awards for Best Novel. The first book in the series, Hyperion, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1990.
